The Road Less Travel # 060: ENO Doublenest Hammock Review

A close relative of mine called me recently and said he wanted to buy a hammock and asked if I could give you any advice. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know what I think about sleeping in a hammock. However, I think hammocks are fun and worth buying at leisure events, festivals, or having a beer in the yard. Luckily I kept in touch with ENO Hammocks and got a Doublenest hammock and Atlas harnesses.
Welcome to our recurring Roads Not Traveled series. In this series, we want to introduce you to hiking, trekking, exploration, and general wilderness adventure. This will include our daily small wins, weaknesses, tips, tricks, and reviews of gear that we really appreciate and use on a regular basis. While a well-trodden path can often be the path to leisurely days, less traveled trails tend to evoke some of the best memories, bad luck, and fun we can imagine. Join us in the comments as we share our travels and hopefully we can all come together and appreciate nature better.
The Fate of Eagles Nest Outfitters tells me the story of how the company started in the back seat of a van and traveled to music events around the country around the turn of the century to sell their equipment. ENO is the company that developed the first knotless hammock suspension system and they are working on making hammock/camping easier and more fun.
Today, their product line includes not only hammocks, but also chairs, bags, outdoor games and blankets. ENO reports that they are as committed to sustainability and environmental protection as they are to making gear that people love.
Eagle’s Nest Outfitters products are covered by a two-year warranty from the date of purchase. They will also perform repairs on certain types of damage.
What can I say about forest belts? My niece set up a hammock for the first time and did it in less than two minutes!
The straps feel solid and the chain loops make it easier to attach a carabiner than straps with adjustable buckles. There are dozens of hammock straps, but I know ENO has kits that give you discounts on hammocks and straps.
If for some reason I decided to buy a hammock, I would go for the Helios ultra-light hammock straps, which cost about $5 more and weigh half as much as the Atlas straps.
The Doublenest hammock measures 9.5 feet before installation, making it comfortable enough for even the tallest person. While this is indeed a double hammock, you should be very comfortable with the person you spend more than half an hour in it with. Well, maybe if you sit sideways in it, it could very well become a real hammock for two.
The material is softer than regular 70 denier nylon. I can testify that it is a little splash resistant at first and can shake water out of it on the first few walks, after which it can turn into a moisture trap that can take time to dry out if left overnight.
Doublenest has a variety of accessories, including insect nets, canopy covers, and insulating quilts and top quilts.
ENO usually has a dozen or more colors at a time and often collaborates with established organizations and groups. For example, they recently launched the Grateful Dead line of hammocks; I think that fits in well with the hammock demographic, doesn’t it?
My niece said she loves the portability of the hammock and harness, just keep them inside or attach to your backpack when you’re on campus. It’s only been a few weeks since she got the hammock, but she’s starting to have questions about things like trekking poles or a jacket that will keep her warm and warm on her outdoor adventures this fall.
Could hammocks be the cure for getting more people into the outdoors? ! We’ll have to wait and see!
